Wedding Day!

I was asked recently to do an updo for a wedding. We didn't have time to do a practice updo before so I was a little nervous.  I had never done her hair before so I had no clue if it was thick and coarse or thin and fine. I had a feeling her hair was more fine then anything but I was still unsure. All I knew is that she had tons of layers!! That could make things difficult. She sent me a few pictures of what she liked so I had an idea of what to do.

I woke up early Saturday morning so I could be to Salt Lake City by 7 to get started. I arrived to the hotel and we got going! As I thought her hair was fine, but thankfully for hairspray that was not a problem! I was pretty proud of myself and she loved it!

It was so much fun to be a part of her big day and see how excited she was! Congrats Joe and Jenna!! You two are going to love married life!

Smokin' Mama!

Today I got to do such a fun haircut and the nicest lady. We did a slight A-line with some layers. When my instructor came to do the final check she told her she looked like a smokin' mama! I love cutting A-lines and I think they are such a cute haircut! Today I tried to cut it in a new method one of my teachers had showed me. It worked and the A-line turned out great, but I learned it is not my favorite. It is supposed to make the cut go faster and make it easier but it totally slowed me down. I love learning new ways and seeing what I like and don't like. This is one I did not like and I know my way is whats good for me!

I always forget to take before pictures! But here is her new cut!

Its a very slight A-line but I still love it! And it was such a fun change for her. We Took off about 4 inches! So fun!

I'm still doing hair!

I know I have been a way for a little bit. I have been busy with school and work and just life in general. School is going great and I am loving every minute of it! I will be done at the end of April and I can't wait!! I'm so excited to be in a salon and out on my own. I am scared to death of it, but so excited!

I have been pretty busy at school. I am currently on the barbing side and really enjoying it. I have been over there for awhile and I really started to miss doing womens hair. I love coloring, cutting, and styling womens hair. Its so fun!! Luckily I had a chance to do all three while I have been in barbering. My friend at school wanted to retouch her color and I jumped at the chance to do it. I love doing color and had so much fun!!  I was also lucky enough to do some up-do's and a dramatic haircut!!!

Three of my friends were asked to be in a fashion show for a local store that sells wedding dresses and formals. They were told to have their hair and make up done for the show. They asked me the day of if I could help them out and I was so excited. Up-Do's are something I need work on and something I don't get a lot of chances to do. We were camping when I found out and realized I would not have much time to do their hair. I got home and rushed to their place. I had 1 hour to do 3 up-do's and hopefully some make up. I hour is not a long time to do 3 up-do's. 1 up-do could take me an hour, so I was a little nervous. I did it!! I got all 3 done in an hour. I didn't have enough time to do some make up and I was a little sad. I love doing my make up and playing around with it. But hey, I got all the hair done!! The up-do's were not as smooth and neat as they would have been if I had more time, but I think I did a pretty good job!!

They were very simple but so much fun!! I wish I had more pictures to show. I forgot to bring my camera and they only had a few. But here is a glimpse!

My friend Ashley has the best hair in the world!! I have always been jealous of her natural color, shine, and length of her hair. She came in about a month and a half ago for a trim and told me that she wanted to donate her hair to Locks of Love. I could not believe it! I have known her since seventh grade and she has always had long hair. But I was not against cutting it all off!! That is so much fun to do so yes, I encouraged it! She told me it be in a while and she would start looking at some pictures. She was ready a lot sooner then I thought she would be. She found some great style's and was ready for a change.

Her hair is so pretty!

Snip, snip, snip!!

Yes I am very consentrated.

Look how cute she is with short hair!!

I love how many layers and piecy we did it. I was able to razor it like crazy and had so much fun with it! I love the razor and wish I got to use it more. Such a fun cut for her.

Its time to weave!

I know, I have not done a post in a very long time! That is probably because I have switched over to barbering and am just doing men's hair. Men's hair is so boring and the same so I never have anything to take a picture of. Plus I feel a little weird asking a guy if I can take his picture.

Barbering is hard. I struggle with mens hair. I feel like I can never get it even and that I leave weight lines in it so it takes me a while to get it the way I like it. I am getting a lot better and quicker so that makes me happy. But I still always find the tiny flaws I leave. One day I will stop being so criticle of the cuts I do.

So with no barbering pictures I thought I would pull out some old ones from cosmetology. This is a color I did forever ago! She wanted a pretty big change and was open for suggestions. I love that!

Of course I forgot to take a picture at the very beginning. So her she is with her hair clipped up and a little color on.
She wanted to keep some blonde in it and get rid of the orangy color she had.

So I put a medium chocolate brown over most of the hair. We did a shadow box and used it to paint between the weave of blonde I did.

I was pretty happy with the results and so was she. Her hair is still a little damp in the picture so you can't get the full effect. She was in a hurry to get to the airport. I am still learning so I am a little slow. I can't wait to get quicker!

Trim trim-im-ey, trim trim-im-ey Trim trim trim-ee!

Today at school my friend Katie asked me if I would trim her hair. She has such a cute A-line and is trying to grow it out. It was getting a little long and starting to lose its shape. It was looking pretty rough and it was bugging her neck. I don't know how she is going to let it grow out haha. But when growing out short hair you have to keep trimming it to give it some style.

She asked me to trim it 30 minutes before my next cut was coming. I sat and thought for a minute. 30 minutes is not that long to give a cut for me.  I am new and still pretty slow. But it was only a trim, it would be easy. So I told her yes and hurried and rushed her to the sink to shampoo her hair. I shampooed her so fast I felt a little bad, I know how that is everyones favorite part of a haircut, but we were in a hurry. She sat in my chair and I started cutting. My friend Chelsea let my use her shears and I am in love with them!! We are not given the best tools in our kit but they work. I had no idea how lame our shears are. Sure they work, but there are much better ones that I can't wait to buy! So anyways, I started the cut and and was done in 30 minutes! I was so proud of myself, and when I had it checked there was only a few tiny hairs they had to take off. I was pretty happy!

Locks of Love!

Locks of Love is such a cool organization. People send in their hair and they make wigs and extensions with them for cancer patients. If my hair grew I would love to do donate. But my hair takes forever to grow and will never be long enough. I just know it.

I have always wanted to cut someones hair who is donating it. I love the program and I just think it would be so much fun to cut that much hair at once! Today was my lucky day. A girl at my school had been given a client but was unable to do the cut. She was in the middle of a test and asked if I could take it since I was done with my perm. At first I really did not want to do the cut. I had just done a perm and was about to clean up, but I knew I had to, and I am so glad that I did!

Jillian came in and told me that she wanted to cut about 10' off. Her hair was so long I could not believe it! I made sure she wanted to cut that much off and then showed her how much it would be. She was certain she wanted it off. Then I suggested donating it to Locks of Love and explained to her what it was. She was all for it and I was thrilled!

Is her hair not extremely long!! I could not believe how long it was and was so excited to cut it!! I braided the hair and snipped it right off. I held it up for her to see and she just started laughing, so then I started laughing. I had so much fun cutting her hair. She was such a cute girl. I found out that she is going to the middle school that I attended. I asked her if the few teachers that I remembered were still working there. Only a few were still there. Boy did that make me feel old!

Look how short we took it!!

I thought she looked so cute with the short hair, and so grow up.

Here is Jillian with her hair. We took off a lot of it! I just love her new hair cut, short and simple! Thanks Jillian for letting me cut your hair, I had so much fun with you!

Color!!

Today at school my friend Katie was ready for a change. We had colored her hair before and took it a dark violet color that was so pretty! We loved that color but it was starting to fade and she wanted a change. She wanted to be lighter but not go blonde, just a light brown color. I was really excited but there was a slight problem. Color does not lift color, and since she had color on her hair I thought we would have to remove it and  I was not looking forward to that. But then I learned that we have one color line at my school that has a few colors that will lift color! I was so excited and could not believe it. So we found a color that she wanted and mixed it up. My instructor sprinkled a little bleach in there just to lighten it even more. I had never thought of that before. You learn something everyday!

I spaced taking a before picture... as always. But thanks to Facebook I have one! This is a before picture of Katie. She looks like a model!

To get her new color we first had to retouch her original color that had started to grow out. My instructor loves to do this when ever she does weave. She always does color over color. I am not a huge fan of this because it never works out for me, and I really don't think you need to all the time. But I did what she said and we retouched her color and then weaved her brown over her color. It was hard the first time I did color over color, but I'm getting used to it. So once the retouch was on the brown was weaved in and this is what we got!

Her color turned out so pretty! I loved it! And doesn't she have a cute A-Line. She is growing it out right now and I wish her luck with that!

Today I also did my first little kid hair cut!! I have always been so nervous to do a kid because they move so much and its just scary! Today I had to overcome that fear.

Hannah was the cutest little 5 year old. I just loved her. She had a really hard time holding still but was so fun to talk to. I learned all about her sister and how Cinderella is her favorite movie and she watches it everyday. She reminded me of my niece...maybe thats why I loved her so much.

Her mom wanted a lot taken off her her hair. I took off about 5in and gave her a cute bob with a slight A Line. It was a little difficult to do with her moving but I was able to do it! I was so proud of myself. I finished her cut and moved on to trim her bangs. She told me that bangs were her favorite and she couldn't stop smiling while I was cutting and styling them. She was so cute! I pulled out my blow dryer to finish her hair and she told me "The sun dries my hair". She would not let my dry it. Come to find out she is a little afraid of the dryer. I felt so bad for pulling it out!

I'm sorry, I don't have any pictures. I know I'm lame. I need to start taking pictures of my cuts!! But I felt a little weird taking a picture of her without her mom's permission. But next time I do a cut, I promise I will take some pictures!

I need my hair done too!

You would think being in hair school I would always be getting my hair done...well I don't and my hair is in some serious need of help! I have a ton of regrowth, my blonde is starting to poke through and my color is just fading. I have a million colors going on right now. But luckily it does not look that bad. I bet I'm the only one that even notices! I am also in need of a hair cut! My ends are deads, my style has grown out, and I'm getting a mullet that flips out. It looks like Carol Brady. I have been trying to grow my hair out and have been putting off cutting it. But today I finally caved. I called my sister and told her I really needed some help. So tomorrow she will work her magic! How great is my sister. She is willing to do my hair on her day off on spur of the moment. I just love her.

This is the look I am going for.

My hair is not this long, but close enough! I just love this cut. I love how choppy it is at the ends and I love the color. I can't wait to be blonde again. It will take awhile but tomorrow will be the start of a long process of going from brown to blonde! I am so excited! Once I cut and color it my next project is to try and get it a little healthy. My hair is so fried and damaged. I have lots of deep conditioning to do to get it decent looking! Wish me luck!

Sleepers.

Today I had a client come in for a partial weave with paint betweens. Her color card confused me so I was a little unsure of what I needed to do. 20 minutes after her scheduled time she came in. I consulted with her on what she wanted to do. She told me she wanted more contrast in her colors and wanted a strippy look, and wanted white and black colors like a zebra. This took me back since she was an older lady and looked pretty conservative.

I decided to do slices instead of weaves to give her the chunky look. As I went to mix my color I recruited my friend Tamera to help me out. I was short on time and knew this would be tricky. My client had extremly short hair on the sides and back and was difficult to slice. I started to part her off to start the color when she started doozing off. This wasn't a slight dooze, her head was rocking back and forth in every direction! I had the hardest time with the slices. Her head was constantly moving and so my foils kept moving. At some points I was bent over sideways trying to get the foils in the proper place.  It was so difficult and my foils kept slipping. Everytime she would jerk her head they would slip more and more. Tamera and I could not belive it.  We started helping each other out by holding up the head while the one was doing foils. We would also start laughing so hard that we would have to turn away or just walk away. It was unreal how much her head was jerking around while she was doozing off.

The color took way longer then it should have due to her extremly short hair and moving head. When we finally got it done we let the colors process. This is when she decieds to wake up and read a book. Why couldn't she have done that when we were working on her hair?! Once the color was fully processed I took her over to rinse her out. The color looked pretty good. It wasn't my stlye but she loved it! It was very strippy and had a lot of contrast. There was a few foils that bleed, but I knew that was going to happen, and lucky for me it just added to the contrast she wanted!

This was an extremely hard color for me to do. She was late, sleeping, had short hair, and did a style I am not a fan of. But in the end it looked great and I learned a lot from it.  Just please, next time you go and get your hair done STAY AWAKE!! I'm lucky my color turned out, I was extremly nervous to see what was going to happen with the slipping and bleeding. You might not be so lucky with your hair, so stay awake and keep your head stil. Thanks we would all appreciate it.

A Lines

(Picture stolen from Google Images)

For some reason almost all the haircuts I give are A Lines. Maybe its because they are so cute! I just love A Lines, but get a little nervous cutting them. A Lines are one of the hardest cutes to do. We were told over and over how hard they can be. That made me scared out of my mind to do them! But just my luck the first cut I ever do on a real person's head was an A Line. I was terrified. All the sudden I couldn't remember anything I was taught. I had no clue how to start it or what to do. I ran and grabbed my instructor to just start it and give me a guide to follow. The haircut turned out great and the girl loved it!  I was so happy and realized that they really are not that bad.

Then about 90% of the hair cuts have done since that day have been A Lines. I am getting more and more confident in them and really like doing them now. Each of my instructors does it a little different. So I have had so many ways shown to me and I finally found one that i really like! Even though I am getting very confident I usually still have one of my instructors come and give me a guide, because that first layer you cut is the most important. Once they would cut the first layer I could just go at it and do it almost perfect. I am still learning the little things that make it just right.

But today was a little different. I had a lady bring in a picture of what she wanted. (That is another fear of mine. Trying to copy a picture and get it to look just like that! This was the first time I have had to face that fear.) The picture was a slight A Line with lots of layers. I looked at it and then looked at her hair and asked a few questions. She didn't want it just like the picture, she wanted her hair a little longer, wanted to keep her part in the middle instead of doing a side part, and not as stacked in the back. So before I got started I went and explained to my instructor how I would cut this cut to see if I was thinking the right way. She said that is excatly how she would cut it! I was so happy!! She then asked if I wanted her to come and give me a guide...I said no. It was time for me to do it on my own. I went over and started cutting. I spent forever on that first layer trying to get it so perfect. When I was done with that layer I went and got her to check it. I didn't want to mess up my guide and then have to go and redo the whole haircut after. She came over and checked it and said it looked great and to keep going. So I kept going and finished the whole cut, threw some layers in it and thined out the bulky parts. I made sure my client liked it and went to get it checked off. My instructor came over and checked and only had to fix a few minor things. I was so happy!!

I faced two of my biggest fears today. Having to go off a picture, and doing and A Line all by myself.  And I did it!! And I actually did a pretty good job. But sadly I forgot to take pictures. For some reason I never think to take before and after pictures of hair cuts, or if I do its when the cut is all done. But I will get better at  that and start taking more pictures. I am pretty good at taking them when I color, but not cut. I need to work on that!

School really can be fun!

I am in my third semester of school and loving it! I just love doing hair. I have always been intrested in it but never did anything about it. I am regreting that now and wished I would have started earlier so I could really enjoy it and be able to use my skills. If everything goes to plan I will be done with school in a year and I will be able to work in a salon for a year and a half to a year before moving away for my husbands grad school.  As much as I want it to work that way I knew that things never go as planned, so I am just taking it one day at a time.

It is my second semester out on the floor working with real peoples hair! No more mannequins! I am loving doing peoples hair. Not just because it is fun, but I love to talk to new people all the time and get to know them in that short time they are in my chair. Sometimes it slows me down because I start talking to much to them. I need to work on multi tasking!

I feel like I am doing pretty well and really understanding everything. My instructors also feel that way. They always have positive things to say to me and are really pleased with my work. I have some amazing instructors that have taught me so much. Everyday of the week the instructors change so I get to learn from so many different ladies. I love that! Everyone does things different and it is so nice to see all the ways people do it and see what works for you, or get inspired to come up with your own way. I have loved learning from them and have learned so much. Everyday I pick up something new.

My sister does hair and has been doing my hair for as long as I can remember. I have learned so much from watching her and asking her questions. When I was in high school I got a receptionist job at her salon. That job was so much fun and I have realized that is how I knew so much when I started school. When we would be learning about color I already knew most of it but also learned a lot. When I worked at the salon I got to observe many stylist work on clients and could see how they did things. I would also help them mix color and listen to them explain why wanted to do that formula of color. They taught me so much and really prepared me for school. I am so glad that I was able to to work there and really see what stylist do everyday and what its like working in a salon. I can't wait to work in a salon!

I have also loved school for the friends I have made. I have met some great women and have had so much fun with them. Its just a cherry on top that there are such great girls there. We have so much fun and are always helping each other.  As much as I want to be done with school and start working I will miss seeing those girls everyday. I just hope when I graduate and start working that I will work in a great and fun salon.
